The Ship Inn at Elie, Fife

1,246 reviews
This dog-friendly pub-with-rooms in Edinburgh’s answer to Southwold has cosy rooms and some of the best fish and chips you’ll ever eat. Decor in all rooms is warm and welcoming, with sensible dark tan carpets well used to sandy boots — the best of the six well-priced rooms is the third-floor Admiral Nelson, which has a rolltop bath, a vintage chaise longue and a wide bay window with sweeping views across the beach to the Bass Rock. There are two dining rooms: one downstairs fair hoachin’ with hounds, a second upstairs sans dogs with great sea views, art for sale on the walls and a striking diving gannet mural by the East Neuk artist Hazel Terry.

The Address, Glasgow

The Address lives up to its name, dropping you right in the heart of Glasgow. Owing to the building’s quirks, no two rooms are alike, though they are all decked out in a harmony of soothing neutrals and earthy hues, with clean lines framing inviting chaises longues that encourage relaxation. North, the in-house restaurant, champions hyperlocal fare, there’s a showstopping cocktail bar and sustainability isn’t just a buzzword here; the whole hotel is powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.

The Haweswater, Cumbria

This revamped 1930s roadhouse in the Lake District has fine dining and its welcoming rooms offer respite after a day’s fell walking. As the room prices suggest, we’re not talking five-star Lakeland luxury: look beyond the eye-catching art deco fixtures and the hotel’s eclectic mix of furniture has a more frugal feel. That doesn’t, however, stop the hotel feeling snug and welcoming; and the flavours of Mark Greenaway’s restaurant are feisty and sassy.
